FOR LOTS OF PEOPLE, GETTING OLDER MEANS GETTINGHAPPIER

Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and

for people (1) … about getting older.

Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they (2) … the age of fifty. In fact , they say by the age of eighty-five, people are happier with their life than they were when they were eighteen years old.

The findings came from a (3) … of more than three hundred forty thousand adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in two thousand eight. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five.

The researchers asked questions about (4) like happiness, sadness and worry. They also

asked about mental or emotional stress.

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in the New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were (5) … among adults between the ages of twenty-two and twenty-five.

The findings showed that stress levels dropped (6) after people reached their fifties.

Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people (7) … likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.

The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional (8) …as they grow

older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men . The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more (9) for what they have an have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be (10) … to changers in how people see the world, or maybe even changers in brain (11)…

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

SCIENCES

Scientific fields are commonly divided into two major groups: 1.natural sciences, which study natural phenomena (including biological life), and 2.social sciences, which study human behaviour and societies. These sciences are called empirical, which means the knowledge must be based on 3.observable phenomena and capable of being tested for its validity by other researchers working under the same conditions.

4.The humanities are academic disciplines which study the human condition, using methods that are primarily analytic or critical. 5.Examples of the disciplines of the humanities are ancient and modern languages, literature, history and philosophy.

6.Formal sciences, like mathematics, statistics and logic, are important to the empirical sciences. 7.The formal sciences are essential in the formation of hypotheses, theories, and laws, both in discovering and describing how things work (natural sciences) and how people think and act (social sciences).

8. Mathematics, which is classified as a formal science, has both similarities to and differences from the natural and social sciences. 9. It is similar to empirical sciences in that it involves an objective, careful and systematic study of an area of knowledge; it is different because of its method of verifying its knowledge, using a priori rather

than empirical methods.

Read the text “Internet innovations” and find the answers to the questions.

Internet innovations

BROADBAND. What is it? A combination of the latest cable and radio technology means that huge amounts of electronic data can now be transmitted from computer to computer at incredibly high speeds. It’s like changing from a narrow pipe delivering your water to a much broader pipe.

Benefits for the user: it’s turned on all the time (you pay a fixed sum every month, so you don’t have to keep dialing up); you can do two Internet operations at the same time (e.g., collect emails and download a picture from the Internet).

WIRELESS. What is it? Computing without phone lines, similar to cordless phone technology. Benefits for the user: the freedom to use a laptop or notebook without connecting it to a phone line (as long as you don’t go too far away from the wireless hub – the main unit of the network that is connected to a phone line).

3G. What is it? “Third generation” mobile technology (still in development) that will be able to transmit data quickly to your phone. Benefits for the user: access to the complete, real Internet (not the mobile-only WAP network) quickly and in colour over your mobile; the ability to download music and video to your mobile.

Wi-Fi. “Wireless fidelity” is the new technology that lets you take your broadband connection and broadcast it around your home or office. Wi-Fi signals can travel more than 1,000 feet, which means that your private connection often leaks out into the street. If you’re feeling generous, you can leave it “open” for anyone passing by to use.

Answer the questions:

  1. Is broadband quicker than an ordinary Internet connection?

  2. How do you pay for a broadband connection?

  3. What are the limits of wireless technology?

  4. Has 3G technology been completely developed yet?

  5. What will you be able to do with 3G technology on your mobile?

  6. What is Wi-Fi?

  7. How far can Wi-Fi signals travel?
